I have used straight cornstarch in the past as a dry shampoo, volumizer, and texturizer. I imagined NIFEISHI Texture Powder for Men would be a better, more elegant option, but I just couldn't get past the greasy, grimy texture of this product in my hair.
I should state off the bat that I'm not a man (it's marketed toward men), nor do I have short hair (which is presumably what they really mean by being intended for men). That said, I do have shorter layers, especially around my face, so I was able to give this a good try to see if it could volumize and texturize my bangs and other face-framing pieces.
I would say that aspect worked well. I could see this product helping style something more intentional, like a bouffant or pompadour, as the label suggests. I would need product in addition to this to get the volume to stay pronounced, but the texturizing lasted all day.
I also used this to help tease and volumize some of the thinning hair on the sides of my head, and I could see a real difference in how much of my scalp showed through. I think this is a good product for that kind of use.
That said, I'm going back to cornstarch because this product gives me the ick on my fingers. I don't know if it's the grease in my hair, if it's combining with another product I have in my hair, if it's just something that bothers me and no one else, if I'm using too much or not enough, but, ugh, this powder feels so gross to me. It's gritty and greasy and sticks to my fingers after I touch my hair. I tried different application methods and on clean hair and didn't have any better luck.
I looked at the ingredients and am kind of confused that there are both mattifying and moisturizing elements in the same mix. Maybe I'm reacting poorly to either too much humectant OR the grease on my hair and skin are mixing with the mattifying products and making a sludge? I honestly don't know, but I can't use this.
By the way, if you see white in my hair, that's, uh, just my hair, not the product. It did seem to blend into my darker hairs well.
The application bottle with little holes in the top made it easy to shake directly on my roots. The price is decent for two bottles since you shouldn't be using a ton per application.
Other people love it, so don't let me stop you from trying it out. Just know that if the oily-sticky texture makes you shudder, you're not alone.
