They feature a super cute mushroom style to nestle among your plants. They're made of sturdy plastic but look like stained glass in the sun, and I actually prefer the plastic since I'm clumsy and don't have to be afraid of dropping them! It also makes them a little lighter to support in the plant, though the water will of course be heavy.
These watering globes have a design I haven't seen in other versions where they come with a cotton wick to insert into the ends to help control the release of the water. The wick is long enough to cut in sixths (at the very specific recommended length of 1.7 inches each) and then there's a little cleaner brush that you can use to poke the wick into the tip after filling. That brush is a godsend, too! It can be so fiddly trying to get soil and debris out of a globe end, so with the wick and the brush, these are a great setup to keep things running smoothly.
The size is ample for an average houseplant. You might need a couple for a big guy or if you're going to be away more than a week.
Filling them is straightforward. I prefer the globes you can water from the top for convenience, but these are fine and can be
easily filled from a sink or watering can. I like to use a little
succulent-watering squeeze bottle I have with a long curved tip so I don't have to leave my plant area to fill them. You'll need to remove the wicks and then put them back in.
You're meant to water the soil thoroughly before inserting these so that they drip out gradually. However, they won't work well in very fast-draining, loose potting mix such as that for succulents or cacti. You could potentially still use them as a weekly or biweekly deep-watering technique, but don't refill them before then or you'll have soggy roots. I tried them out in a drier medium for my photos and the water just poured right out of the mushrooms. In wetter, more compacted pots, there's still water in the globes days later.
If you're looking for an all-around set-it-and-forget-it watering system that will work for ANY plant, you'll need to keep looking and likely design your own, but these will work well for a planned absence and for water-loving plants like an herb garden or ferns.
Since these mushroom globes match what they're intended to do, are super attractive, have helpful design upgrades, and include a useful tool, I happily rate these five stars.
