I have mild dysphagia from acid reflux, and I have a husband with a severely sensitive gag reflex and children with varying degrees of difficulties with swallowing pills, so we seemed like a great test family for this product.
Gloup Pill Swallowing Aid is a gel that purports to
coat pills in a slick, sweet jelly that will slip everything past the mouth sentinels and
down the throat.
I have been using it for some large fiber supplement capsules that often get stuck the wrong way in my throat. I can squirt a little of the Gloup, pop the supplements in it, and then swallow it all together with a swig of water, and it really does make a difference in how easily it goes down.
My husband tried it with his own larger pills and found the same effect: that it was much more comfortable than swallowing without it, and it didn't trigger his gag reflex.
We both thought the taste was acceptable, sweet but not cloying, and the texture is a thick gel but not gross.
I tried it on two children who can't swallow pills. One successfully was able to with Gloup, and one continues to have difficulty and didn't like the taste. I'd say that means it's still at least worth the shot. For kids and others who need to take a lot of pills, it might mean the difference between misery and comfort.
The price, though: Whew! It is expensive, and I’m glad it at least counts as a medical expense for HSA/FSA eligibility. Fortunately, it is a very substantial bottle and it will last a long time since you don't use much per instance.
I recommend Gloup if you need it because it's the first thing that's really helped us. It just truly works well.
